The **Icelandic Meteorological Office** is closely monitoring both the **eruption at Sundhnúkur** and the **accompanying volcanic pollution**. According to a recent [news article](https://www.akureyri.net/is/frettir/mengun-i-renun-ekki-eiturefni-i-modunni) on *Reykjavik.net*, the pollution has primarily affected the **Westfjords and North Iceland**.

Air quality expert **Hlynur Árnason** from the **Environment and Energy Agency (UOS)** explained that the main cause is simply wind direction. Winds have carried the volcanic plume across **Snæfellsnes** to the **Westfjords**, and from there, it has dispersed throughout North Iceland. Calm weather conditions have meant that the smog continues to hang over the region.

Air quality in **Reykjavik** has often been poor in recent days, according to the [Environment and Energy Agency’s air quality map](https://loftgaedi.is/?zoomLevel=14&lat=65.68024403878219&lng=-18.116284595558916). The **Icelandic Meteorological Office** also offers a [global volcanic pollution map](https://maps.s5p-pal.com/so2-7km-nrt/day/), which displays **daily sulphur dioxide emissions** drifting across **Europe and the Atlantic**, based on satellite measurements. This data is available on their official [eruption information page](https://www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/kvikuhlaup-er-hafid-a-sundhnuksgigarodinni).
