Laxárdalur eyðibýli júlí 2012 / Laxárdalur farm (ruins) July 2012
The birthplace of the Laxdal family name
The name of this old farm and the valley (bearing the same name) – Laxárdalur – is the name many of our family members took its name from – Laxdal (also written Laxdall in Blaine, WA) – when they emigrated to north America (Manitoba, Ca; Mouse River, North Dakota, USA; Blaine, Washington, USA). This was the birthplace of many of them.
They did this to adhere to the family-name convention in the English speaking world. In Iceland at that time – and still today – most families used the patronymic system in that they reflect the immediate father (or mother) of the child and not the historic family lineage.
I.e. Finnur (1860 – 1940) was given the first name Finnur when born and was the son of Jóhann. His full name then becomes (by the Icelandic convention)
Hr. Finnur Jóhannsson – (Finnur Jóhanns-son) being the son of his fathers given name.
When boarding the SS Australasian of the Allan Line in Liverpool, England (the ship that took them to Montreal Canada on 7 July 1901) he still has not changed his name. This can be seen in the passagers list http://on.fb.me/OIPmVT
After arriving in Canada (7 July 1901) he changes his name (and the names of all family members immigrating with him) by adding the Laxdal name to the previous full name. The same had his mother and brother done more the 20 years before when moving to Canada and USA.
At this point he is known as Mr. Finnur Jóhannsson Laxdal.

Ég og Stefán Elís sonur minn fórum í júlí 2012 og keyrðum að bæjarstæði og rústum bæjarins. Bærinn er á Skógarströnd, við Hvammsfjörð og telst í dag til Dalabyggðar.
